A little luxury, big comfortable beds and a personal touch complete each cosy haven. From the distressed walls, sash windows and weathered doors to the parquet and Oregon pine floorboards, the echoes of a bygone era transcend the home. Easy-going, old-fashioned charm appeals to visitors from near and far seeking occassion to slow down. Antique wall sconces, brass lanterns and chandeliers softly illuminate, while furnishings are a delicate reflection of comfort, refined elegance and erstwhile style.

All beds are dressed in airy 100% white cotton percale linen with comfortable cushions to sink into and plump duvets for a restful night's sleep. The house is built for the South African climate keeping you cool in the summer heat and cosy by winter nights. Heaters and powerful circulating fans are foundin each bedroom. Mosquito nets and plug-in repellers ward off insects. Discerning guests find here a matching of modern and timeless decor in the bathrooms. Two suites feature big ball & claw bath tubs and all have large walk-in showers. In keeping with the home-style, bedrooms are not equipped with fridges but a communal beverage station is available for self-service. Take warmth from this memorable homestead and indulge with real coffee or a refreshing detox tea before unwinding on a verandah under a tin roof, on a garden bench for bush views or pool-side in the thatched summer house.

~ King Suite ~

Our master bedroom sleeps 2 and is situated in heart of Halkett Country House. Comfort and luxury are partnered here beautifully with a king size bed built of resurrected wood, draped by romantic mosquito netting. Antique wall sconces and delicate chandeliers, originally from Cape Dutch homes, cast a warm glow over the distressed white walls. This suite boasts a large en-suite bathroom with double vanity, heated towel rail, luxury walk-in shower as well as a ball & claw bath tub. Step through French doors into your exquisite private courtyard which features a waterfall shower amidst a cascade of trailing plants.

~ Queen Suite ~

Bedrooms doors open onto the lawn for a garden view and with complimentary sherry in hand, gaze dreamily into the bushveld. This suite has a queen size bed, with romantic swathes of mosquito drapes helping you rest easily at night. High ceilings and wooden flooring are lit by antique brass chandeliers. Hand-crafted wrought iron candlesticks adorn the walls. Easily transformed with the addition of 2 beds into a family room, this is ideal for parents sharing with young children. The parquet-floored bathroom features a heated towel rail, a white ball & claw bath tub also a luxury walk-in shower with pebble floor and earthy screed walls

 Clean natural linen curtains, a large gilt & crystal chandelier and antique dresser adorn this cosy bedroom situated at the front of Halkett with garden and verandah views. Equally suited for singles or couples, the room is accessed via a parquet-floored private reading room, full of old and contemporary fiction. This comprises additional space for the visitor to relax in - or extra beds for extended families. A shower room a mere step across the hallway is matched with this room and features an antique oak vanity with upstanding white ceramic basin and a luxury walk-in shower with pebbled floor.

 ~ Rondavel ~

A long term favourite with overseas visitors seeking an African experience, the rondavel is simply romantic with a four-poster effect mosquito netting over the king size bed. Rustic, thatched and built of solid stone, amidst the whitewashed interior, you will find classical furnishing consisting of an original dark mahogany wardrobe and ornate dressing table. A large wrought iron chandelier hangs centre-stage and the room reflects a more African style. Open the stable door to welcome a whisper of a breeze. The unusual rustic bathroom is a separate nook, situated adjacent and features a shower, wherein ivy plants trail whimsically.

Halkett Country House is best-suited to accommodate up to 8 adults and 4 children (sharing bedrooms). We have a capacity for no more than 12 persons staying overnight. We must stress that it is not advisable to try to accommodate more! The Queen Suite may be arranged as a family room with both the queen-sized bed and 2 extra full-size single beds in it. The Front Room may also be arranged as a family room with 2 extra full-size single beds or 3 smaller cot beds for sleeping children in the room's adjacent sitting room. Cots for babies are not available. Contact us directly in relation to "plus-size" group bookings.

We can arrange accommodation for up to 12 further guests in rustic, electricity-free, cottages located within 1km of this residence in the circumstance that Halkett Country House is used as a venue for a special occasion such as family gatherings or weddings. We can cater for a maximum of 24 day visitors dining on site. Rates will be reflective of board basis and the event.
